Choosing outfits for your family photos can feel like the hardest part of the whole experience. You’ve picked a date, booked the session and then it hits you… what is everyone going to wear?
As a Logan family photographer, I’ve seen it all over the years. The colour combos that look amazing, the little details that tie everything together, and the things that can end up being more distracting than you realise. The good news? It doesn’t have to be stressful.
Here are a few of my favourite tips on what to wear for your family photoshoot to make outfit planning so much easier:

Keep it simple with colours
Neutrals and soft tones always photograph beautifully. Think creams, beige, dusty pinks, muted greens, soft blues, or warm earthy shades. These colours work well outdoors and in the studio and won’t date as trends change.
Coordinate, don’t match
Gone are the days of everyone in jeans and white shirts. Instead, aim for colours that complement each other. For example, if mum is in a flowy dress in soft blush, dad could wear a beige shirt and the kids something in cream or sage. It looks natural while still pulled together.

Think about textures
Knits, linen, cotton and layers add lovely depth and interest without being too busy. A chunky knit cardigan or a linen romper on your little one looks beautiful and timeless.
Avoid big logos and super bright colours
That neon green shirt your son loves might be great for the playground, but in photos it will steal all the attention. Stick to solid colours or subtle patterns.
Dress for comfort
If your little one isn’t comfy, you’ll know about it. Outfits should allow for cuddles, sitting, running and playing. When everyone feels good in what they’re wearing, it shows in the photos.
Bonus tip for mums: Choose your outfit first. Pick something you feel confident and comfortable in, then build the family’s outfits around yours.
